Are you Eligible for Medicare?
Generally, you are eligible for Medicare if you or your spouse worked for at least 10 years in Medicare-covered employment and you are 65 years old and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
If you are not 65, you might also qualify for coverage if you have a disability or End-Stage Renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant).
Medicare Overview
Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people do not pay a premium for Part A.
Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers outpatient care, doctors' services, and preventive services. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.
Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans): Private health plans that offer Part A and Part B benefits, often including additional services. Many also offer prescription drug coverage.
Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps pay for prescription drugs. Available as standalone plans or included in Medicare Advantage Plans. Most people pay a monthly premium.
Important Dates to Remember
Annual Enrollment Period October 15-December 7 The period of time you can change your Medicare coverage for next year.
In most cases, December 7 is the last day you can change your Medicare coverage for next year.
January 1—Coverage Begins
Your new coverage begins if you switched to a new plan. If you stay with the same plan, any changes to coverage, benefits, or costs for the new year will begin on January 1.
